Wednesday Swim Session

Another great session last night, here's a report from Mandy......

Enjoyed last night's second swim session...for anyone considering coming along to the Wednesday night swim, it's a definite MUST! where else do you get the use of a pool exclusively for your own use....AND not just one but sometimes two coaches!! it's not just for the proficient & "fit" swimmers, otherwise I wouldn't be there!! I can only really do breast stroke, have recently learned to swim with head under the water and just getting to grips with basics of the crawl...not to mention having zero fitness when it comes to swimming a few lengths...! and if you are already a pretty good swimmer, you'll get an excellent training session which will work you hard & improve your technique in to the bargain...so if you are thinking of giving it a go, stop thinking and just do it, if I can anyone can!! it's all for the price of £3 (ATHelite Tri Club members) and £4 for non-members each week.....hope to see you next week....more details of time & place see earlier Blog or call ATHelite...

Up & down in the Borders.

The Sunday run group really excelled themselves at the weekend. The plan was to do a steady 1hr 30 but at the deciding junction the sun shone & the lambs were frollicking around in the fields & we all felt wonderful. We took in an extra loop which meant that by the time we got back to the cars we had made it to 2 hours. An excellent result for everyone, once again it just shows how far you can go in a group with the right pacing. Don't worry if you are thinking of coming along - there are shorter cut offs but you might just surprise yourself. NOTE - if you are coming please bring some fluids with you, especially if it is a hot one. We can drop them at junctions so no need to carry bottles for the entire run. Alternatively do what I do - drink 4 pints through the morning before you start then spend the run doing efforts to catch up after stopping in every gateway for a pee.

Myself & Gen headed down to Peebles on Sunday evening to stay with Kenny & Kirsty & take in a couple of bike rides. The first Sun pm ride was immediately cancelled due to the 2 hour morning run & the fact that the wine was open.
We headed out on Monday am from Peebles for an excellent ride - the best part of 80 miles around the Borders & littered with some good climbs & sweeping descents. We managed the Talla Hill (VERY steep - ouch) the Berry Bush (long), Witch's Knowe (steep finish) & the Paddy Slack (long & looks downhill but is actually uphill). Also managed to squeeze in the 'Large Mocha', the 'Huge Fruit Cake' & the 'Raspberry Ripple Cone' which were particularly memorable. Need to spend more time in the saddle again as my biggest problem on this ride was my sore a**e which for me is a sign of not enough biking.
Having finished this arduous ride we had to resist the urge to curl up & sleep in a corner & whizz back to Ek for JogScotland & then down to Chatelherault for the Harriers 8 mile trail run.
To be honest we might have pulled out of this but for the fact we had bullied Mandy into going so we pushed on. Gen ran with Mandy who seemed to run the entire route non-stop with relative ease, despite the ups & downs. I trotted round much more comfortably than I thought I would too so quite pleased.
Not sure if doing the 10 mile TT tonight is the best idea - might re-assess that nearer the time (& also see if the wind drops).
Happy Training!!
C.

Weds Swim Session

Wednesday saw the launch of our first exclusive ATHelite Tri Club Swim Session at Hamilton College - what a difference it is having the pool to yourselves with 2 coaches pool side.
This is clearly a hugely effective session - I personally felt a huge benefit even from just one go at it & would highly recommend it to anyone. You get out what you put in to these sessions & it was definately a tough one in the fast lane, but don't be put off by that - there are 4 lanes so just slot in depending on your ability.
I am currently thinking that scheduling in our first 3 Gym weights sessions in the same week as the first Hamilton College Session was maybe a mistake as I am finding it hard to lift a pen today but hopefully it will all pay off!!
If you want to attend this session, whatever level you are at, come along to Hamilton College (on the Bothwell Road in between Hamilton Racecourse entrance & the posh Car Garages) on Wednesday evening from 5.00pm (not before) & have a splash (we will arrive about 5.15 & need to be out by 7.00pm).
Cost is currently £4.00 for non ATC members & £3.00 for members, though this will drop as the numbers increase (we just need to cover the cost of the pool hire).
Special well done this week to Alan & Graeme who both really stuck in there & lets always thank Jack & Dougie for shouting at us from the sides - they are volunteering their time for us & we should always be very appreciative of this.
See you next Wednesday!!
Colin

St Christophers 10 mile TT

Short report for the St Christophers 10 mile TT last night. 21 riders made it out last night for the Tues night TT and for once it was quite a warm evening. A gentle breeze, coming from a south westerly direction made sure that you had to work for your time, for the first couple of miles, the Strathaven Rd and Greenhills Rd but it was definitely an easier night. That said, there was just the one new PB's from ATHelite members. Only myself and Mandy Cullie (she is a member isn't she?) and Gareth made it out this week. I came in with a time of 26:45, slightly slower than last week but I def hadn't recovered from my sunday ride. A good example of what happens when you don't eat the right food and stretch enough after long miles in the saddle. Mandy came home in a time of 32:55. Gareth improved on his first appearance time of 29.08. Winner again was Mark Ratter in a time of 24:18. I'm never getting anywhere near that time! Good news though, a stretch of the Strathaven Road has been resurfaced and is a lot more enjoyable to ride at speed!

Sunday Morning Run

Sunday morning, Graham R, Aileen, Graeme A and I showed our commitment and headed off on the long, steady run…. (Not so sure about the “steady” when you have folks like Graham R and Colin setting the pace!!!). So with Graham R steaming ahead (that’s both in terms of running speed & volume of talking) and me as navigator we set off on our travels around the scenic countryside of Auldhouse & beyond…unlike the cyclists on the Saturday, no stop offs for tea, buns or shopping as we are made of hardier stuff! …I somehow managed to stick with Graham R all the way round, yes quite an achievement for me as at his pace my breathing was off the scale but I still managed to chuck in the occasional monosyllable, at the appropriate moments, to his colourful stories!!! Seriously though, I think it was his chat that kept me going. Aileen and Graeme A took the last cut off to complete an 8 mile loop….fantastic achievement for Graeme A who was only running the occasional 5k distance a few weeks ago….. Graham and I finished the 10.3 mile route & were well chuffed with ourselves despite knowing we would pay later in the day as the muscle tiredness & soreness kicked in!!!! But all in all a great run, in perfect running weather…

ATHelite Tri Club Swim

Yippee, we are ready to start our swim session at our new base!!!!
As of Wednesday 20th, May we will be training at
Hamilton College
Session will run from 5.30pm to 6.45pm

The cost of the sessions are £3 for ATC members and £4 for non members.
We will look at reducing the cost to £2 over the coming months once we have an idea of numbers. The cost will pay for the pool hire.

The sessions will be coached as much as possible however, there may be the odd time that the coach can't make it and on these nights the coaches will give us a session to do.

We have the pool from 5pm, so you can get there early if you like. You may not get in the pool any earlier than 5pm.
Also because it is a school the main doors get locked at 7pm so, we must all be out of the building by 7pm. If you want a shower then get out the pool earlier. Please be outside the building by 7pm.

The first session will be quite relaxed so that our coaches can get a look at what they're dealing with!!
Thereafter we will do various sessions including work with hand paddles, fins, wetsuit practice and potentially video analysis. (If you do not want videoed you will be forewarned when this session is happening and you have the option to not attend on this night)

There has been alot of interest in this session so please email me or leave a comment if you are attending.

St Christies 10 TT

A good turn out on Tuesday for the Time Trial, mainly down to the fact the sun was out, though this was slightly deceptive as it was still baltic & still quite a stiff breeze.

First home for the Club was the ever improving Colin Bain who remarkably took almost a minute & a half off the previous one, don't forget that the previous one was 4 mins quicker!! Colin was 4th overall so a great performance.
Next up in 5th place with a 37 sec PB was myself in 27.13 - I am just coming off a running block into a biking block so looking to improve on this in the next couple of weeks.
Gareth had an excellent first run going sub 30 in 29.12. A slight uncertain moment on the course added a bit of time so hopefully sub 29 next time.
Graeme Allan went round in 31.15 - not his quickest this season but a good night should get him near to the 30 minute mark.
Frank Honings was also there for his first go at the course & having made it round the route successfully pulled in 10 metres short of the time & didn't record a time!! We think he was approx 33 mins. Just a teething problem that won't happen again I'm sure.
Ben was out on his new machine though unfortunately whilst speeding out of Auldhouse he somehow managed to flip his bike over a pot hole resulting in a smashed helmet, bleeding legs & arms & ripped clothes. Don't worry - he is ok, just a bit tender in places & most importantly he was back at work the next day.

Well done everyone.
Colin

Weekend Training

No races on this week (apart from the womens 10k) so we should be good to go with a normal weekend of training.
Any takers for the Saturday Bike? Leave comments here so we can see. Weather looks like it could be ok, Gen is feeling poorly & I am on a recovery day but a couple of people have mentioned going out. 9.00am at the shop.

Sunday longer easy run also on as usual - meet before Langlands Golf Course 9.00am. I will be there & so should a good others. Again, weather looks like it should be ok.

Colin

Troon Tortoises 10k 2009

We thought we may have got away with the weather as we headed towards Troon & a glimpse of blue sky was seen ahead but how wrong we were. Standing next to the sea in vest & shorts as the wind howled in off the coast and the rain driving horizontally up my shorts was far from pleasant, but there seemed a good turnout nonetheless.

The virtual gun eventually went off & we soon forgot about the weather (for the time being) as we turned at the end of the prom & got the temporary benefit of the back wind. This was only too short lived as every turn after that the wind seemed to become stronger & stronger & more head on. Then it started raining, then raining harder which then became something resembling sleet. If I ever get laser eye surgery I will at least know what it feels like.

First home was Me, Colin, somehow pulling a PB out of the bag despite the conditions - finishing in 36.39. Next in was Graham Ramage in an excellent 49.19, followed by Michael Rooney finishing his first ever 10k in 51.50. Mandy W also had a great PB in 55.20 then Graeme Allan came through in 1.01.24 which I think could be a PB but we'll need him to confirm that here. Graeme has yet to be repremanded for running with headphones but we think he was listening to either Chariots of Fire or a Self Help Session.
Well done all for turning up & running, to Gen for cheering us all on in the rain - this was a tough one and I can't remember the last time I was that wet & cold, apart from last night doing a 5k which wasn't a great deal better!

A couple of downsides for this race were the crammed registration area due to the weather which made it hard to actually get in the building to get your number, and also the fiddly chip timers that mean you have to unthread your laces then re-lace again. Not easy to get off when your pinkies are like mini-milks at the end of a cold race & especially annoying when you have elastic laces that need adjusting for ages afterwards.
Good points - a good cup of sugary tea after & cracking sausage supper from the chippy.

MBT

ATHelite are now MBT stockists
MBT, Masai Barefoot Technology, is a Swiss invention. About 10 years ago, they made a startling discovery that walking barefoot over natural, uneven ground can alleviate back pain. They began to develop a footwear technology that would make the natural instability of soft grounds such as Korean paddy fields or the East African savannah accessible also to those who have to walk on hard surfaces. In 1996, after years spent on research and development, Masai Barefoot Technology was mature enough to be launched on the market. MBTs are now available in over twenty countries, and approximately one million pairs of this revolutionary footwear technology are sold every year.

MBT would like to help people all over the world lead a healthier, more active and happier life. MBT is convinced that human fitness and health are significantly influenced by the way we walk – this conviction has already been substantiated objectively by many scientific studies. Furthermore, they believe walking in conventional shoes on flat, hard terrain i.e. pavement has a negative impact on our bodies because they unnaturally stabilise and constrain the foot, therefore important muscles lose their function. So MBT designed the first anti-shoe that transforms flat, hard surfaces to an uneven, soft terrain via its unique technology: a curved sole and a patented Masai Sensor and thus cleverly recreates the effects of walking barefoot, naturally. MBT attempts to awaken and strengthen the awareness of physiologically correct walking among people world-wide by disseminating the idea and concept of MBT physiological footwear. The benefits of physiologically correct walking can thus be made available to as many people as possible all over the world, in a straightforward and uncomplicated way.

MBT Benefits

  • Activates neglected muscles
  • Improves posture and gait
  • Tones and shapes the body
  • Can help with back, hip, leg and foot problems
  • Can help with joint, muscle, ligament and tendon injuries
  • Reduces stress on knee and hip joints
    MBT activates the whole body
MBT can help specific medical conditions click here for more information

Sport

Masai Barefoot Technology is used as a sports training and rehab device: many professional athletes rely on MBTs for recuperation, prevention and accelerated healing of injuries and in endurance and coordination training.

Daily Use

Masai Barefoot Technology in everyday use: train muscles, burn calories, protect joints ... all while you're doing something else. Shopping, in the office, at home. MBTs act as training equipment, every step of the way.

Weekend Training

The Saturday bike will still be on this week though it may be a bit sparse due to Bishopbriggs Tri on Sunday. Please leave a comment here if you are thinking of turning up so we can see who is going to be there.

The Sunday run is definately on, starting at 9.00am as per last week. Probably head off together again but split onto 2 groups as it goes along depending on how far you want to go. Lots of turning points so don't be shy.
NB; meeting point is now in the lay-by just before the Langlands Golf Course as opposed to in the Car Park itself due to us taking all the spaces last week.

Good luck to Frank, Gareth & Graeme at the Tri on Sunday - hope the weather is good to you & we look forward to the race report.
