Final Big Training Week!

As we enter our final training week I have been looking at a few results from the weekends action & it shows the real highs & lows of the sport. A great race from young Jonathon Brownlee saw him pick up Silver at Hyde Park while the previously invincible Alistair dropped places & collapsed exhausted over the finish line in 10th place. On his Twitter he says the Doctors verdict is simple. A lack of Cake & Pies! That is one issue I won't be having!

A few guys from Glasgow Tri Club were in action at Ironman Switzerland at the weekend. Two finished & two DNF'd for various reasons. Genevieves sister Pamela had a disrupted training period going upto Ironman Lake Placid (New York) at the weekend as she was temporarily moved by her work from Canada to Australia. Pam was flying around & loving the tough bike course but we lost her on the athlete tracker late last night & it turns out she collapsed 4 miles from the finish on the run and was shipped off to the medical tent where she spent several hours but being let out. So close but Pam is a fit chick and it just shows how tough these events are & anything can happen on the day. All we can do is train & recover as much as our lives allow & see what happens.

Last week saw a rare bit of time away for me & G as we headed down to stay with my parents in Lincolnshire for 4 days. Incredibly whilst it was pizzazling with rain in Scotland we had 4 days of humid sunny weather with temps between 25 & 27 degrees so good training conditions for Copenhagen. Lincs has a great mix of sharp climbs on the Wolds that we like and wide open flat (& windy!) fens & we did a great long flat ride that we can never do up here. Last weeks training went as follows;

Lincolnshire;
Sun; Bike 50 miles, Run 1 hr
Mon; Bike 101 miles, Run 1 hr
Tues; Bike 40 miles
Weds; Bike 40 miles, Run 1 hr
Home;
Thurs; Run 2 hrs
Fri; OW Swim Loch Lomond 2.5k
Sat; Rest & Massage
Sun; Bike 60 mile for me (had to work). Genevieve rode 114 miles with Graeme & Michael!

Overall we both easily cleared 20 hours training & felt just about ok at the end of it.

This week is our final high volume week - no more big rides thankfully but more shorter sharper stuff but we still aim to hit around 18 hours training. We follow that with 2 weeks of Taper then it's race day. The weather forecast in Copenhagen seems pretty changable in the run up to the event - a mix of hot sunny days, rain & wind so it will just come down to the day I think. Fingers crossed!
